[Website] Critter.net?
Mar. 29th, 2018 10:49 amOkay, so I can sign into FTP on Critter.net again. Yay! Now ... what to do?
Good grief, but this thing hasn't been updated in 8 years or so. Okay, 4 years ago, the thing crashed and was only partially restored from archives.
A lot of this I hardly even care about anymore. A lot of my old art? Sketchy garbage that only had any value in the form of in-jokes with people I haven't had any contact with for at least a decade. I've got tons of bad scans of old Warzone miniatures: I could probably do far better if I'd take the actual miniatures, clean up the paint jobs, then take an honest-to-goodness photograph in proper lighting, then upload THAT onto a site that offers me free image hosting such as DeviantArt.
There's so much I could just remove. The big question is ... what's worth keeping? What holds any value?
Papercraft models, fonts, and figure flats are probably the most potentially useful. I think I want to keep all that, but do a bit of house-cleaning. It might need some better organization. I could also do with uploading a few additions. (I've done some work for various projects that has never seen the light of day. Maybe I should track down the people involved and see if I could get permission to post my work on my site as freebies, so at least it wasn't all for nothing.)
The Pirates RPG treasure gallery ... eh, not great art, but potentially useful. Ditto for the rest of the Pirates RPG stuff: Someone MIGHT be able to use it. Again, it could use some updating, though, if I could find the original work files.
Old Ironclaw stuff? Ironclaw has gone through another edition since then. Nobody cares about my old session summaries. I'm not sure about all the character sketch art. Maybe I should archive it somewhere (burn it to disc) and try converting the "flats" into better-quality PDFs. It'd be even better if I colorized things, but that'd be a whole lot more work for something that I don't even know anyone would care about.
Star Wars? Oh boy, that needs to go. There have been SO many Star Wars games come and gone since then.
My "Deadlands" site could use a lot of work. For one thing, it's really about "Deadlands: Hell on Earth" rather than classic Deadlands. For another thing, I don't think anyone actually plays that system anymore, since Deadlands has been "Reloaded." More work to do, I guess -- but at least semi-relevant since I've been toying with the idea of running a Deadlands campaign after Goober_Chris's Pathfinder campaign. (Whether it's online or tabletop, or both, I don't know.)
I should see how much space my templates for Minecraft Ruins take up over on my Dropbox folder. I haven't done much NEW for it, but I've been keeping them up to date with the latest version of Minecraft and Ruins. I suspect the next major Minecraft update will break Ruins and require a LOT of work to revamp, and AtomicStryker might give up at that point. But a lot of modpacks use older versions of Minecraft anyway (many major ones are stuck back at version 1.7.10, when the current version is 1.12), so there still might be some value.
My old "AD&D Clip Art" -- it varies greatly in quality, but I've heard of a few people making some use of it. Maybe if I organized it better, genericized it a bit as "fantasy RPG clip art."
Superior City: I should probably just archive this. I'm not sure what purpose it serves other than to take up space anymore.
Gallery: A lot of this can go to archives. It eats up a lot of my 1G quota, and DeviantArt makes a lot more sense as a venue for any of my artwork I want to put on the "virtual fridge" to show off to anyone who cares.
AHQ/WQ: This could use a lot of cleaning up. The mini photos could go, since they aren't really of such quality as to brag about, and they don't really help anyone. However, the fan material might still be of interest to SOMEONE out there. I've heard that some people actually still play the game.
I guess the big thing would be the matter of where to START. What could I clean up right now? I suppose the first thing is to free up a bunch of space (gallery pictures, RPG campaign "shrines" for dead systems, etc.). THEN, I can think about moving my Minecraft stuff over here, and seeing which of my figure-flat and papercraft abandoned projects could be turned into freebie downloads I could host on the site.
