I had actually thought of a crow or raven, and that's a possibility as well -- but my character will also have Animal Handling and Wild Empathy, so it's possible he could still befriend a raven or crow as a pet for "coolness factor." He just wouldn't be sending it into combat.
The main reason for the elk was that I was trying to tie my character in with Digital_Rampage's -- who is a paladin of Erastil, and elks are a beast associated with Erastil. I figure the elk would be something I'd whistle for when we're outside and journeying overland but, yeah, when it comes time to descend some stairs into a dungeon, I'd be leaving the elk to its own devices above ground. Maybe that's not as tactical as having a pet wolf with me (and believe me, I have NOTHING against wolves :) ) but I just thought it'd be cool.
But then again ... maybe I find a wildcat as an animal companion, and I have an ELK for a pet -- or maybe as a riding-beast. I've got several levels before that gets sorted out.
(Incidentally, if the land is so perilous that I can't leave a leveled animal-companion elk or other large beast above ground while we explore a dungeon, then we need to do a little monster-extermination in the above-ground area first. We ARE supposed to be making the region safe for future homesteading, after all.)
