I think there's a definite bent toward bitterness and sadness-- not as goals in themselves, but as leaveners in the palate. Sort of the way that you might have a bit of pickled vegetables as part of a bento, so it serves as a palate cleanser. Tragic endings are a thing in some Japanese anime and movies, so maybe they decided to try getting the tragic in right at the start. Dunno!
I've been watching Sword Art Online lately. Not as good as Log Horizon, but entertaining enough; just a caveat that it has the usual 'MC is OP' kind of thing going on.
