I've definitely seen a number of manga and anime that fall into that category. Gives you Revenge-Driven Hero, usually, but sometimes the character rises above it and becomes the Real Chosen One, despite all the hardships (as happens with the Shield hero). I guess it's just... a thing?

Maybe it appeals to the people who feel victimized or belittled in real life, and want a character who can dish out some payback on those kind of people. Of course, said character can't actually dish out said payback without having been treated that way in the first place.
